Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly was captivated with an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. While DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later the film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
